Israeli Society: A Sociological Introduction

In this course we will examine the fundamental sociological processes and major issues which characterize contemporary societies in Israel. We will learn about, examine and discuss in class the formative tensions, symbols identities and power relations in contemporary society. The examination will begin historically, with issues that have been pertinent in and to (pre-state) Zionism. Then the course will gradually progress to the present, stopping at notable historic points of reference, including 1948 and 1967. The perspective I will offer is associated with Critical Sociology, and will offer a different narrative, or a number of narratives, which will hopefully promote a different perspective on this society than that which is commonly held.
